The Preeminence Of Christ – Part 12
God doesn’t keep score of our sins, but He keeps score of the good we do.
All our sins have been removed from us as far as the east is from the west (Psalms 103:12) through Jesus taking them unto Himself. Our sins are not remembered anymore (Hebrews 8:12).
But our merciful God remembers all the good we do. Even giving a person a cup of cold water in His name will not go unnoticed or unrewarded (Matthew 10:42). God is an awesome and good God!
Hebrews 6:10 says, “For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do.”
What a wonderful truth! Many people believe without any qualification that the Lord keeps score of all the wrong we do, but that nothing we do is good enough for the Lord to take notice of. The abovementioned verses show that this belief is not correct.
Hebrews 6:13 continues to say, “For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself.”
Now, the Lord didn’t swear to Abraham for Himself. HE DIDN’T NEED TO STRENGTHEN HIS WORD. IT WAS ALREADY PERFECT.
But in order TO GIVE ABRAHAM ASSURANCE, the Lord swore with an oath to Abraham that He would perform His promises that He had made. He spoke Abraham’s “language” to get through to him.
Hebrews 6:14 quotes Genesis 22:16-18, which says:
“And said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son — blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.””
Hebrews 6:15‭-‬17 says, “Then Abraham waited patiently, and he received what God had promised. Now when people take an oath, they call on someone greater than themselves to hold them to it. And without any question that oath is binding. God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind.”
God will never change His promise to us. In Psalms 89:34 He says, “My covenant I will not break, Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.”
Second Corinthians 1:20 says, “For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.” Luke 12:32 says, “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”
These verses show God’s commitment to fulfilling His promises to us. We should never question His commitment to honour His word.
Just like it happened with Abraham, at times it may take a while before we see the manifestation of His word, but we should not give up because He shall surely fulfill it.
Romans 8:32 says, “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, HOW SHALL HE NOT WITH HIM ALSO FREELY GIVE US ALL THINGS?”
Let’s:

Christ Is Resurrected, Now What? — Part 16

It is not our love for God that makes our faith strong, our faith is made strong when we get a revelation of His love for us.

Our faith is strong when we are confident in God’s unconditional love for us. That is why Paul prayed for us to be rooted and grounded in love.

Ephesians 3:17 says, “That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, BEING ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN LOVE…” Was Paul speaking about our love for God and love for one another? No, HE WAS TALKING ABOUT CHRIST’S LOVE FOR US.

Paul prayed that we get a revelation of how much Christ loves us. He prayed that when it comes to the love of Christ for us we “MAY BE ABLE TO COMPREHEND WITH ALL THE SAINTS WHAT IS THE WIDTH AND LENGTH AND DEPTH AND HEIGHT OF HIS LOVE FOR US” (Ephesians 3:18‭).

In this prayer Paul said nothing about our love for God. The reason for that is the fact that in the New Covenant OUR LOVE FOR GOD IS SECONDARY TO HIS LOVE FOR US. First John 4:19 says, “We love Him BECAUSE He first loved us.”

First John 4:10 says, “In this is love, NOT THAT WE LOVED GOD, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” We now know that as much as we did not love God with all we have before He sent Jesus to die for our sins, WE DO NOT HAVE TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL WE HAVE BEFORE HE LAVISHES US WITH ALL HE GIVES US. That is confirmed by Romans 8:32 when it says:

“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also FREELY GIVE US ALL THINGS?” As much as He freely gave us Christ, He freely gives us all things.

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO THE RELATIONSHIP GOD HAD WITH ISRAEL AFTER THE INTRODUCTION OF THE LAW AT MOUNT SINAI (Exodus 19 & 20).

Prior to the introduction of the law, God dealt with Israel solely based on His covenant with Abraham. After the law was introduced, Israel had to keep the law to qualify for the benefits of the covenant God had with Abraham.

Since Christ has fulfilled the law, God is back to treating His people (those who believe in Christ) according to the covenant He has with Abraham without them having to qualify by keeping the law — Galatians 3:9-14,29.

We no longer have to qualify for the benefits of our covenant by meeting the law God gave to Moses, which Jesus summed up in Matthew 22:37-40.

We now live under the NEW LAW OF LOVE THAT IS BASED ON CHRIST’S LOVE FOR US. John 13:34 says, “A NEW COMMANDMENT I give to you, that you love one another; AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, that you also love one another.” First John 3:23 says, “AND THIS IS HIS COMMANDMENT: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.”

We need to remembered 1 John 4:10 which says, “In this is love, NOT THAT WE LOVED GOD, BUT THAT HE LOVED US and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

We can only share unconditional love with others when we understand that we are loved unconditionally by Christ. SO, OUR FOCUS SHOULD NOT BE ON HOW MUCH WE LOVE GOD, WE SHOULD FOCUS ON HOW MUCH GOD LOVES US — 1 John 4:19.

That is what Paul prayed in Ephesians 3:17-18. In Ephesians 3:19 he tells us what will happen when we have a revelation of how much God loves us — “To know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; THAT YOU MAY BE FILLED WITH ALL THE FULLNESS OF GOD.”

Many of us spend hours upon hours praying that we be filled with the fullness of God. Paul told us how to get filled with the fulness of God, it is THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LOVE OF CHRIST WHICH PASSES KNOWLEDGE. Again, note that Paul is talking about the love of Christ, not our love for Christ.

Many of us believe we have to do the opposite of that for us to be filled with the fullness of God. We need to remember that we have already received the fullness of Christ — John 1:16: “And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace”.

So, it is not about getting the fullness of Christ (in Him dwells the fullness of the Godhead — Colossians 2:9), IT IS ABOUT HAVING A REVELATION OF WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE.

When we get this revelation, God will be able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think, AND HE SHALL BE GLORIFIED. That is what Paul said in Ephesians 3:20-21:

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

It is important to note that Ephesians 3:20 says God works through the power that is already within us (Ephesians 1:15-23). According to Ephesians 3:17-19, we don’t need to get power for us to enjoy the fullness of God, WE NEED THE REVELATION OF THE LOVE OF CHRIST FOR US.

Change doesn’t have to be difficult, painful, and labor-intensive process. We all can change. The secret is to understand that to experience lasting change outwardly, that CHANGE HAS TO BEGIN ON THE INSIDE.

The Bible reveals that we are what we think in our hearts. Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” If we decide not to change what we think in our hearts we will not see outward change. It doesn’t matter how much we can pray, beg God, and get other people to intercede for us, if we do not change from the inside we will not see a change on the outside.

Romans 8:6 says that if we are carnally minded we will experience death, but if we are spiritually minded we will experience life and peace. When we plant tomatoes we do not expect to harvest anything else but tomatoes. When we plant potatoes we expect to harvest potatoes. The same principle applies to our lives; WE SHOULD NOT EXPECT TO HARVEST WHAT WE DID NOT SOW IN THE GARDEN OF OUR HEARTS.

Many people want to see more grace and peace in their lives, so they pray for it. The Bible clearly says grace and peace get multiplied to us through the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ – 2 Peter 1:2. So, it doesn’t matter how much we pray for God’s favor and peace, we will not see their multiplication until we apply the Word of God; getting to know God and Jesus Christ.

We will never experience change if we do not really want it. Change only happens when we are really sick and tired of our situation and we want change much more than the little comfort we may be getting as we deal with the present situation. WHEN WE REALLY WANT CHANGE WE WILL CHANGE OUR INSIDE. One definition of insanity is doing the same thing but expect different results.

When God came to childless Abram He had to change how Abram saw himself before he could receive the child he wanted. God told Abram to number the stars and the sand of seashores, and then God told Abram that that is how many descendants he would have – Genesis 22:17. The other thing God did to get Abram to change how he looked at himself was that God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, which means father of multitudes – Genesis 17:5.

In the story of Abraham we see that he had to change how he saw himself before he could father the child of the promise. The same needs to happen to us if we want to see lasting change in our lives; WE NEED TO CHANGE HOW WE SEE OURSELVES. The Word of God is potent enough to bring about any change we want.

Proverbs 4:20‭-‬23 “My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. LET THEM PENETRATE DEEP INTO YOUR HEART, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”

Second Corinthians 3:18 “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, ARE BEING TRANSFORMED INTO THE SAME IMAGE from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

Understanding How God Deals With Us – Part 12

Friday, June 3rd, 2016 at 6:51 a.m

Once we believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, the rest of our Christian life is learning to walk in the spirit. Walking in the spirit is all about letting what God has accomplished in us, and for us, dominate us more than our physical or emotional realm.

This starts by us perceiving our spirit by faith in God’s Word as we can’t see or feel it. As believers we now need to walk by faith not by what we see or feel – 2 Corinthians 5:7. The Word of God is the perfect tool to get us to that point – John 6:63. The Word is the spiritual mirror that tells us about who we are – James 1:23-25.

Romans 6:11&14 says, “11 So you also should CONSIDER YOURSELVES TO BE DEAD TO THE POWER OF SIN and ALIVE TO GOD THROUGH CHRIST JESUS. 14 SIN IS NO LONGER YOUR MASTER, for YOU NO LONGER LIVE UNDER THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW. Instead, you live under THE FREEDOM OF GOD’S GRACE.”

When we decide to walk in the spirit we break the power of sin over our lives:
Galatians 5:16 NKJV “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” To walk in the spirit WE SIMPLY NEED TO BASE OUR THOUGHTS, ACTIONS, AND IDENTITY ON WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST.

Romans 8:12-13 says, “12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if BY THE SPIRIT YOU PUT TO DEATH THE DEEDS OF THE BODY, YOU WILL LIVE.”

We should not strive in our natural strength to overcome sin, AS WE FOCUS ON OUR SPIRITS WE ARE CAUSING THE SINFUL DEEDS TO STOP. This is the reason preaching should be about what God has accomplished in our spirits.

The challenge we have is that a lot of people see themselves as victims of the power of sin. It shouldn’t be like that. If they can start focusing on who they are in their spirits, sin will lose its power over their bodies – Romans 12:2.
BELIEVERS DON’T NEED THE LAW TO STOP SINNING, THEY NEED GRACE – Romans 6:14. SINNERS NEED THE LAW TO SEE HOW SINFUL THEY ARE AND REALISE THE NEED OF THE SAVIOUR – 1 Timothy 1:8-9, Galatians 5:20, and Romans 3:20.

Romans 6:1-4 says, “Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? 3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And JUST AS CHRIST WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD BY THE GLORIOUS POWER OF THE FATHER, NOW WE ALSO MAY LIVE NEW LIVES.

The word ‘sin’ in Romans 6:2 is a noun. It doesn’t mean that we don’t commit sin, it means that we died to the power of sin. Once we see that sin nature is taken out of us, the believers in Christ, we break free from sin imprisonment. We just have to know that our penalty has been paid, and then walk out of sin prison. Remember, we are what we think. That is why WE SHOULD BE TAUGHT THAT WE ARE RIGHTEOUS IN THE EYES OF GOD BECAUSE JESUS DIED IN OUR PLACE. That gives us power to start living up to who we are in the spirit.

This is what sets Christianity apart from religions of this world – THE ONE WHO IS WORSHIPPED DIED FOR THE WORSHIPERS whereas religions are about dying for the one who is worshipped. Christianity is about GOD ENABLING US TO OVERCOME SIN AND LIVE ABOVE IT. It is not about keeping rules and regulations to please the one we worship. John 1:14,17.

Some people have made Christianity religion because they have made it to be about keeping rules and regulations. Christianity is about a relationship with God which leads to freedom – 2 Corinthians 3:15-18.

It is time we live our new lives. We will not attain this through our own strength, God’s power is readily available to give us victory over sin and to reveal this new life. Let’s use our faith to overcome sin – 2 Corinthians 3:18. We must renew our minds to the truth that OUR SPIRITS DIED TO SIN, AND HAVE NO DESIRE FOR SIN – Romans 6:5-6. As we do that sin will lose its power over our bodies. This is how we overcome sin through grace – John 1:17 and John 8:10-11.

When we live under grace the Holy Spirit produces right living:
Galatians 5:22-23 “22 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

Understanding How God Deals With Us – Part 11

What is true – is it ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED or is it BORN AGAIN, AGAIN?

The Bible doesn’t teach either of the two.

FIRSTLY, the Bible teaches that people can become reprobate and lose their salvation — Hebrews 6:4-6, Romans 1:28&32, and Hebrews 3:13-14. Therefore it is not true to say Once Saved, Always Saved.

SECONDLY the Bible teaches that our salvation completely depends on putting faith in Jesus Christ, not our actions. So, as much as our actions do not lead to salvation they cannot lead to us losing our salvation.

Romans 3:19-20,27-28 NLT
“19 Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God. 20 For NO ONE CAN EVER BE MADE RIGHT WITH GOD BY DOING WHAT THE LAW COMMANDS. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. 27 Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? NO, BECAUSE OUR ACQUITTAL IS NOT BASED ON OBEYING THE LAW. IT IS BASED ON FAITH. 28 So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.”

When we accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord our spirits are created in RIGHTEOUSNESS and TRUE HOLINESS — Ephesians 4:24. And then we are sealed with the Holy Spirit such that our spirits are no longer affected by the sins we commit in our bodies — Ephesians 1:13.

When we start believing that Jesus Christ died for all our sins OUR SPIRITS become HOLY and ARE PERFECTED FOREVER — Hebrews 10:10&14. We have ETERNAL REDEMPTION — Hebrews 9:12. And, OUR SPIRITS CANNOT SIN — 1 John 3:9.

So, our sins do not affect our relationship with God such that we lose our salvation when we commit sin. God is Spirit and He relates to us THROUGH our spirits — John 4:24.

Therefore, we do not need to be BORN AGAIN EVERY TIME WE COMMIT SIN. We need to repent and get back to walking in the Spirit — Galatians 5:16.

It is important to remember that God doesn’t take into account sins we commit because He put all of them into Jesus’ account when He died for us; they are fully paid for – Romans 4:7-8.

God will not judge the same sin twice; if we believe in Jesus we will not be judged for our sins because Jesus was judged for them. The only sin we will be judged for is the sin of not believing in Jesus — John 16:8-9.

We shouldn’t try to attain righteousness before God through our actions — Romans 10:3-4 KJV, “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about TO ESTABLISH THEIR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS, HAVE NOT SUBMITTED THEMSELVES UNTO THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD. For CHRIST IS THE END OF THE LAW FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS to every one that believeth.”

So, once we confess Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour we are saved, and we will never lose our salvation unless we denounce Jesus Christ. Remember that God doesn’t hold us accountable for blasphemy that is done in ignorance — 1 Timothy 1:13.

If we are born-again, we must enjoy our salvation without fear of losing it. We just need to keep on renewing our thinking by exposing ourselves to the Word so that our hearts will never be hardened by sin — Hebrews 3:13, Romans 12:2, and 2 Corinthians 3:18.

Attending church to hear the Word about being complete in Christ, and getting a chance to exercise spiritual life, are necessary practices for PERSONAL GROWTH and FRUITFULNESS — Hebrews 10:24-25. In the process of attending church one needs to protect self from listening to condemnation as that leads to death — 2 Corinthians 3:6-9.

We are special to God and He deals with us in a special way that doesn’t make sense to a human mind. Receive His unconditional love — 1 John 4:10.

Understanding How God Deals With Us – Part 10

It is interesting to note that when Paul preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ he was asked if he meant that people could continue in sin, but when most of us preach nobody asks us that question. Are we preaching a different gospel from the one that was preached by Paul?

Paul dealt with that question four different times – Romans 3:8, 6:1-2, 6:15, and Galatians 2:17. When most of us preach people want to run away, and we pride ourselves on that because we think we are preaching the real good news (Gospel).

People who need Jesus Christ avoid many of us because of the message we preach (death and condemnation – 2 Corinthians 3:6-9), but Jesus was accused of being a friend of sinners because sinners loved being around Him – Matthew 11:19. Are we preaching a different message from the one that was preached by Jesus?

We underplay how Jesus got Zacchaeus to change – Luke 19:1-10. Jesus did what was seen by religious leaders as wrong when He invited Himself into the home of a sinner and ate with sinners. Some religious leaders seem to care more about their image than people’s souls. Jesus didn’t care about what religious leaders were saying about Him, He only cared about the lost.

God loves sinners, He sent His Son to die for sinners not saints – Romans 5:8. It is time some of us get our priorities right and reach out to the world the way Jesus did. Jesus scolded religious leaders of His day because they had forgotten the purpose of their existence, and He unconditionally loved the lost – Matthew 18:11 and Luke 19:10.

Was Jesus saying sinners should continue in sin? No. He gave them power to overcome sin by not condemning them – John 8:1-11 and Luke 19:1-10. What Jesus and the religious leaders wanted was the same thing; repentance of a sinner. But they used different methods; religious leaders were condemning sinners whereas Jesus showed the unconditional love of the Father to sinners. Sharing God’s kindness is the way to change the lives of lost people – Romans 2:4.

2 Corinthians 5:19 says, “For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, NO LONGER COUNTING PEOPLE’S SINS AGAINST THEM. And He gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.”

This is how God is dealing with sinners, let’s join Him.

Remember that the Bible doesn’t teach that God accepts or rejects us because of our actions; it teaches that our actions can never be good enough:

Romans 3:20-22
20 “For NO ONE CAN EVER BE MADE RIGHT WITH GOD BY DOING WHAT THE LAW COMMANDS. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. 21 BUT NOW GOD HAS SHOWN US A WAY TO BE MADE RIGHT WITH HIM WITHOUT KEEPING THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. 22 WE ARE MADE RIGHT WITH GOD BY PLACING OUR FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.”

Every time one talks about the fact that we are no longer under the Law the question is asked, ‘does it mean that we can continue sinning?’ The answer is NO.

In Romans 6 Paul addresses this question. He gives two main reasons why we should not continue sinning even when the Law is removed from our relationship with God.

THE FIRST REASON is that when one believes in Christ that person dies to the power of sin and, just like Jesus who died and was raised to new life, this person is raised to new life in the Spirit in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:1-3. THIS IS WHERE VICTORY OVER SIN BEGINS.

Romans 6:11 says, “Even so CONSIDER YOURSELVES ALSO DEAD TO SIN AND YOUR RELATION TO IT BROKEN, but alive to God [LIVING IN UNBROKEN FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM] in Christ Jesus”.

To do what Romans 6:11 says requires faith. Faith is the substance of things HOPED FOR, the evidence of THINGS NOT SEEN (Hebrews 11:1). Therefore, as a believer you need to start seeing yourself dead to the power of sin and living in unbroken fellowship with God in Christ Jesus. Romans 12:2 says “Do not conform to this world but be TRANSFORMED by the RENEWAL OF YOUR MIND”. The transformation in your life will be in proportion to the level of the renewal of your mind. Little change in your mind will result in little change in your life; big change in how you see yourself will result in big change in your life.

In 2 Corinthians 3:18 the Bible says “But we all, with unveiled face BEHOLDING as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are TRANSFORMED INTO THE SAME IMAGE from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit”. This verse tells us that we do not change our lives, THE HOLY SPIRIT CHANGES US AS WE BEHOLD WHAT JESUS ACCOMPLISHED FOR US. As we meditate on our freedom from the power of sin and the life we have in Christ, our lives become what we see in the Word of God. If we continue thinking the same way we did before we became believers we will never see change in our lives (Romans 12:2).

THE SECOND REASON we should not continue sinning even when the Law is removed from our relationship with God is found in Romans 6:14, “For sin shall not have dominion over you, BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT UNDER LAW BUT UNDER GRACE”.

As mentioned in the previous article, the Law arouses sinful passions in our bodies (Romans 7:5). If we put ourselves under the Law we are putting ourselves under bondage. God doesn’t need the law to lead us to repentance, He uses His kindness (Romans 2:4).

When Jesus took away the Law of Moses (Colossians 2:13-15) He replaced it with the Law of love (John 13:34 & 1 John 3:23). If we receive God’s love FOR US we will be able to love others (1 John 4:19). If I am led by love I will not steal from my neighbour, I will not kill, I will not envy, etc. BECAUSE I TRUST GOD TO PROVIDE FOR ME AND I LOVE MY NEIGHBOUR I WILL NOT STEAL FROM HIM. My trust in what God did for me in Christ and love for my neighbour replaces the Law that was given to Moses (1 John 3:23 & Galatians 3:19).

The passage in John 1:14-17 tells us that Jesus came to introduce grace in the place of the law. Verse 14 says Jesus was full of grace and truth, not law and truth. MOSES INTRODUCED THE LAW, JESUS INTRODUCED GRACE AND TRUTH. The Law demands from people, grace supplies what they need. This is love in action!

(To be continued…)
