Life In The Spirit – Part 25

In Paul’s epistles, he always linked doctrinal truth with practical expression.

In his epistle to Colossians, Paul stated that as believers, Christ is our life, and one day we will manifest His magnificent glory. In light of that statement, Paul spoke of putting to death (mortifying) sins that are associated with our earthly members.

A garden left to itself will produce more weeds than vegetables. A life without resistance to the lust of the flesh will become overwhelmed with sins.

It is for that reason Paul said, "So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world." (Colossians 3:5)

Colossians 3:6-7 says, "Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE, in which you yourselves ONCE WALKED when you lived in them."

Although the penalty of sin has been paid on our behalf and we are new creations (Romans 6:23; 2 Corinthians 5:17, and 21), it is equally true that sin still attacks our unredeemed humanity. Therefore, WE MUST CONTINUALLY YIELD AND TRUST OURSELVES TO THE HOLY SPIRIT AND HIS POWER (Zechariah 4:6; Ephesians 5:18, and 6:17).

The “sons of disobedience”, in Colossians 3:6, is referring to those who are not born again. God has placed the wrath for the sins of the believers on Jesus, AND WE WILL NOT BE PUNISHED, because that would be double jeopardy.

Those who reject Jesus will be punished, but not for their individual sins. The sins of the whole world have already been paid for (1 John 2:2 with Hebrews 9:12 and Hebrews 9:15). Those who reject Jesus will be judged for the singular sin of not believing on Jesus (John 16:9). That’s the greatest sin of all.

Paul was writing to believers. Probably some of them were guilty of the sins mentioned in Colossians 3:5, but Paul was making a distinction between them and “the sons of disobedience” (Colossians 3:6). Paul was stressing that the Colossian believers used to habitually commit the acts of immorality mentioned in Colossians 3:5.

Colossians 3:8‭-‬10 says, "But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. PUT ON YOUR NEW NATURE, AND BE RENEWED AS YOU LEARN TO KNOW YOUR CREATOR AND BECOME LIKE HIM."

The Lord is giving us a command to bring our bodies and souls under control. He would be unjust to command such a thing if we were incapable of doing it. We can do it.

So, according to Colossians 3:10, life in the Spirit is having our natural life influenced by who we are in Christ. The life in the Spirit is not lived by our natural strength, the Holy Spirit gives us power to live (Zechariah 4:6 & John 6:63).

Life In The Spirit – Part 24

Colossians 3:1‭-‬2 (MSG) says, "So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. SEE THINGS FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE."

If we place a higher value on what we have in Christ than what we have on earth, our hearts will follow. Where our treasure is, there will our hearts be also (Matthew 6:21). Thinking on the riches we have in Christ will turn our hearts toward heavenly things.

Colossians 3:2‭-‬3 says, "Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. FOR YOU DIED TO THIS LIFE, and YOUR REAL LIFE IS HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD."

Biblically, death means separation, not annihilation. Adam and Eve didn’t cease to exist when they ate of the forbidden fruit, but they did die, or BECOME SEPARATED FROM GOD. At physical death, people don’t cease to exist, but their spirits and souls separate from their bodies.

Likewise, OUR DEATH TO SIN IS A SEPARATION FROM SIN AND ITS PENALTIES. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). We were guilty of sin, and the death sentence was imposed on us. BUT JESUS DIED FOR US, PAYING OUR DEBT. The Scriptures teach that we were crucified with Christ (Galatians 2:20).

Now we are dead to, or separated from, sin and its penalty, which was death, or separation from God. SIN CAN NEVER CONDEMN US AGAIN (Romans 8:1). We are no longer liable for our sins in the sight of God. THIS IS THE GOOD NEWS OF THE GOSPEL.

The word “hidden”, in verse 3, is used metaphorically as something that is concealed and safe. We as Christians have not yet been glorified and perfected in our flesh, but WE ARE NOW JUSTIFIED, SECURE, AND SAFE IN CHRIST JESUS (Romans 8:31-39).

Colossians 3:4 says, "When Christ, Who is our life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in [the splendor of His] glory." Because my life is hidden with Christ in God, I will appear with Jesus in glory when He appears. THIS ISN'T DEPENDENT ON MY SELF-HOLINESS. This is part of the gift of salvation that I received through faith.

Paul stated that Christ Himself is our life. HE DOESN'T JUST GIVE LIFE; HE IS OUR LIFE (John 14:6). In 2 Corinthians 4:10, Paul stated that it is the life of Jesus that is manifested in our mortal bodies. CHRISTIANITY IS NOT US LIVING FOR GOD BUT RATHER CHRIST LIVING THROUGH US. Therefore, we should die to ourselves and let Christ live through us without hindrance.

Life In The Spirit – Part 23

All born-again believers are risen with Christ. IT'S AN ACCOMPLISHED FACT IN OUR SPIRITS.

Colossians 3:1 says, "Since you HAVE BEEN RAISED to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, WHERE CHRIST SITS in the place of honor at God’s right hand."

It is important to understand the context of this verse in order to get the full picture of what Paul was saying. In Colossians 2:4, Paul said he was saying these things so no one could charm and attract the Colossians into turning away from Christ. He wanted them to know the TOTAL COMPLETENESS OF THEIR NEW LIFE in Jesus so that they would never be drawn away (Colossians 2:10).

Paul went on to explain that we are dead to all the laws dealing with externals (Colossians 2:20-23). Therefore, since we are dead to this world and risen with Christ (Romans 6:5), our focus should be on heavenly things, not earthly things. THE LAW, WITH IT'S EMPHASIS ON ACTIONS, IS ONE OF THOSE EARTHLY THINGS THAT SHOULD NO LONGER OCCUPY US.

If we focus on WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST AND WHAT HE HAS GIVEN US, HOLINESS WILL FOLLOW (2 Corinthians 3:18). Preoccupation with our earthly position (i.e., OUR ACTIONS OF HOLINESS) is a sure sign that we are not focused on our heavenly position (Colossians 2:22).

HOLINESS IS A FRUIT (Romans 6:22). Trees don't strain to produce fruit, they do it naturally. We shouldn't strain to produce holiness, we simply have to RENEW/FEED OUR MINDS OF WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST.

We don't automatically see change in our lives when we receive Christ BECAUSE WE ARE NOT JUST SPIRIT BEINGS; we also have fleshly bodies (Romans 7:18) that must be subjected to the Holy Spirit (through the Word – John 6:63) in order to experience the resurrection victory that is present in our spirits (2 Corinthians 3:18).

To seek eternal realities BY THINKING, MEDITATING, REASONING, AND INQUIRING INTO THEM should be the norm of all New Testament believers. To be occupied with CHRIST AND HIS PURPOSES WILL RELEASE THE RESURRECTION POWER OF JESUS INTO OUR PHYSICAL LIVES.

Certainly, part of the heavenly things we are to think on is OUR POSITION IN CHRIST AND ALL THAT IT ENTAILS. Jesus instructed His disciples to think about their mansions in the Father’s house as AN ANTIDOTE TO DISCOURAGEMENT (John 14:2). We are to think of everything in the PERSPECTIVE OF ETERNITY (2 Corinthians 4:18). We are to meditate in the Word of God DAY AND NIGHT (Joshua 1:8).

Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

Life In The Spirit – Part 22

"Don’t tolerate people who try to run your life, ordering you to bow and scrape, insisting that you join their obsession with angels and that you seek out visions. They’re a lot of hot air, that’s all they are. THEY'RE COMPLETELY OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE SOURCE OF LIFE, CHRIST, who puts us together in one piece, whose very breath and blood flow through us. He is the Head and we are the body. We can grow up healthy in God only as he nourishes us." (Colossians 2:18‭-‬19 MSG)

The thrust of Paul’s criticism here was against those who did not give Jesus the place He deserved. In the previous verses, Paul spoke about exalting Jesus above ALL THE OLD TESTAMENT RITUALS THAT SHADOWED HIS COMING. Now he spoke out against people who put the emphasis on worshiping angels and self-denial, but they didn’t place Jesus as the Head.

Those who emphasize observing days such as the Sabbath, observing feasts and dietary laws, and worshiping angels are all taking away from the Headship of Jesus. CHRISTIANITY IS A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS, NOT THE OBSERVANCE OF RITUALS. Rituals are the heart of religion, but TRUE CHRISTIANITY REJECTS RITUALS FOR RELATIONSHIP.

Colossians 2:20‭-‬23 (MSG) says, "So, then, if with Christ you’ve put all that PRETENTIOUS and INFANTILE RELIGION behind you, why do you let yourselves be bullied by it? “Don’t touch this! Don’t taste that! Don’t go near this!” Do you think things that are here today and gone tomorrow are worth that kind of attention? SUCH THINGS SOUND IMPRESSIVE IF SAID IN A DEEP ENOUGH VOICE. They even give the illusion of being pious and humble and ascetic. BUT THEY'RE JUST ANOTHER WAY OF SHOWING OFF, MAKING YOURSELVES LOOK IMPORTANT."

Paul was asking why anyone would want to go back to the Law. The Law had an external focus on holiness. It all involved outward actions. But in the New Testament, the Lord changes our insides (heart), and THEN THE OUTWARD ACTIONS CHANGE AS A BYPRODUCT (Matthew 23:25-26). We need to be occupied with the greater issues of the heart, and the external will fall in line (2 Corinthians 4:17-18).

The self-denial that Paul was speaking against in these verses is embraced by much of “Christianity” today. Historically, self-denial, or severe self-discipline and avoiding of all forms of indulgence, has always been a big part of false religion. Most religions of the world teach an abasement of self, but they do it as penitence in order to obtain salvation. This is not the denying of self that the Bible advocates. True self-denial as the Scriptures promote is not self-hatred (Galatians 2:20), but rather an enthroning of Christ above self. We have a new identity in Christ that replaces the “old self” (1 Corinthians 1:28). This isn’t done in order to obtain salvation but as a response of love to what Christ has already done for us.

Life In The Spirit – Part 21

Jesus stripped satan and his forces of all their power and authority. He also made an exhibit of them.

We see this in Colossians 2:15 – "In this way, He DISARMED the spiritual rulers and authorities. HE SHAMED THEM PUBLICLY by His victory over them on the cross."

Verse 14 of the same chapter tells us how Jesus accomplished this, "HE CANCELED THE RECORD OF THE CHARGES AGAINST US AND TOOK IT AWAY BY NAILING IT TO THE CROSS." This act of Jesus DISARMED satan and his forces such that he no longer has power over us. This verse shows us that satan's weapon against humanity was the Law (1 Corinthians 15:56).

Satan is called the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 10:12). Now that he is cast out of heaven, he cannot accuse us before God but he plays mental games with us (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

That is why Paul continued to say in Colossians 2:16‭-‬17, "So DON'T LET ANYONE CONDEMN YOU for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. FOR THESE RULES ARE ONLY SHADOWS OF THE REALITY YET TO COME. AND CHRIST HIMSELF IS THAT REALITY."

This was a radical statement for Paul’s time. The Jews judged people all the time over these things. It was prescribed in Scripture that a person who didn’t keep these laws could be killed. But Christ took all of these laws and nailed them to His cross (Colossians 2:14), thereby freeing us from their observance.

Most Christians have departed from the Old Testament laws concerning restrictions on what we eat and drink because of New Testament scriptures like 1 Timothy 4:1-5 where the Apostle Paul made it very clear that to practice the O.T. dietary laws is a doctrine of devils.

Likewise, most Christians have realized we have been redeemed from the O.T. laws concerning special feast and sacrifices every new moon (Ezekiel 46:6). Most Christians don’t even know when the last new moon was. So, four of the five things listed in Colossians 2:16 have been recognized by the N.T. church as symbolic, with their fulfillment in Christ. Therefore, we don’t follow these O.T. patterns.

BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE SABBATH, MANY N.T. CHRISTIANS EXEMPT IT FROM THIS LIST AND THE OBVIOUS TRUTH EXPRESSED IN THE NEXT VERSE. This is inconsistent!

If we are redeemed from the first four things listed in this verse, THEN WE ARE REDEEMED FROM THE O.T. OBSERVANCE OF THE SABBATH TOO. Under our New Covenant with God, WE NOW LIVE IN A CONTINUAL SABBATH (Hebrews 4:3-9 and Colossians 2:17).

Each of the five things listed in Colossians 2:16 was a shadow of Christ (Colossians 2:17). The dietary laws, feast days, new moon offerings, and the Sabbath all represented Christ and what He would accomplish (Hebrews 4).

Now that we have the person of Christ, each one of these things has now served its purpose and IS NO LONGER NECESSARY TO OBSERVE. The Sabbath was a picture of a relationship with God that Jesus has now opened to all who believe. THE SABBATH WAS ONLY A PICTURE AND IS NOW FULFILLED IN CHRIST (Romans 14:14).

This is life in the Spirit; we worship God by what Jesus Christ did for us, not what we do in the flesh (John 4:24).

Life In The Spirit – Part 20

We are alive with Christ.

Colossians 2:13 says, "You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. THEN GOD MADE YOU ALIVE WITH CHRIST, for he forgave all our sins."

According to Hebrews 10:10-14, this is speaking of past, present, and even future sins. All our sins have been dealt with through the atonement of Christ (1 John 2:2).

The death spoken of in Colossians 2:13 is spiritual death resulting from sin. People without Christ may be physically alive, yet they walk around in the state of spiritual death (Ephesians 2:1). Scripture describes this condition as being alienated from the life of God, controlled by the old nature, having no hope, being by nature the children of wrath, and controlled by the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:1-6, 12, 4:18; and 5:19-21).

BEING MADE ALIVE WITH CHRIST REVERSES THE EFFECTS OF SPIRITUAL DEATH. All that had once alienated us from God is gone, and WE ARE NOW SEATED WITH CHRIST JESUS IN THE VERY PRESENCE OF GOD (Colossians 3:1).

Note that the wonderful benefits of our salvation, which Paul was describing in Colossians 2:11-13, ALL HAPPENED THROUGH CHRIST and took place as Christ Jesus EXPERIENCED THEM FOR US. His experience became our experience.

We don’t personally overcome sin. Jesus has already overcome sin for us, and WE JUST LET HIM LIVE THROUGH US (Galatians 2:20) and manifest that victory. Jesus has already conquered death, AND WE HAVE HIS RESURRECTION POWER LIVING IN US (Ephesians 1:19).

Colossians 2:14 says, "He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross." HALLELUJAH!

Jesus took the Law as a document and nailed it to His cross, in effect writing across the bill “Paid in Full.” The New Testament believer is no longer under the Law (1 Corinthians 9:21, 1 Corinthians 10:23, and Romans 3:19).

THE LORD NOT ONLY FORGAVE OUR TRANSGRESSIONS OF HIS LAWS, BUT HE DID AWAY WITH THE LAWS. Now we simply relate to God by faith in Jesus. Where there is no Law, there is no transgression (Romans 4:15).

The Law was just taken out of the way. IT IS ONLY OUT OF THE WAY OF THOSE WHO ARE BELIEVERS IN CHRIST. Those who have not put their faith in Christ are still under the Law (John 3:36 and 1 Timothy 1:8-11) with its wrath and negative effects.

This is life in the Spirit.
