Love Revealed – Part 8
Love is the New Commandment.
Jesus said, “A NEW COMMANDMENT I give to you, that you love one another; AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35 NKJV
When He said that He did not mean the Commandments He quoted in Matthew 22:36-40 “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Jesus said all the Law hangs on two Commandments. He later gave His disciples a New Commandment –John 13:34. Apostle John confirmed that God gave them a New Commandment (1 John 3:23 – “And this is His commandment: that we should BELIEVE ON THE NAME OF HIS SON JESUS CHRIST and LOVE ONE ANOTHER, as He gave us commandment.”)
It is important to note that God’s Law will never bend to accommodate us, hence Jesus had to die in our place. When God gave us His Law He was not saying to us “DO THE BEST YOU CAN BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE HUMAN”. NO, He was saying “YOU CANNOT MEET MY STANDARD, YOU NEED A SAVIOUR” – Romans 3:19 and Galatians 3:19. The Law pronounced judgement against us and we could not escape it. The only viable solution to satisfy the demand of the Law of God was to have a sinless man die for sinful men and women – 2 Corinthians 5:21.
Hebrews 7:12 tells us that because priesthood changed (no longer belonging to the Levites but under the order of Melchizedek) THE LAW HAD TO CHANGE.
We are no longer expected to try to live according to Matthew 22:36-40, THERE IS NO WAY THAT WE COULD MEET THAT STANDARD. As I said earlier, our attempt to live according to this standard doesn’t justify us before God – Romans 3:19-20. We must thank Jesus who died in our place, we no longer owe the Law anything. Our debt was paid in full!
The beautiful thing about the NEW COMMANDMENT is that God Himself empowers us to walk in love – 1 John 4:19 and 2 Corinthians 3:18. Under the New Commandment, before we do anything, we are declared to be like Jesus – 1 John 4:17. We are told that the love story is not about how much we love God, it is about HOW MUCH HE LOVES US – 1 John 4:10. We are holy and without blame in love – Ephesians 1:4. We are already accepted in the One He loves – Ephesians 1:6. Hallelujah!
There is absolutely nothing that can undo God’s love for us because it is not based on what we do but what He did for us in Jesus Christ. Because of His unconditional love He doesn’t count our sins against us – Romans 4:6-8. He started treating us like this when Jesus walked this earth – 2 Corinthians 5:18-19.
WHEN WE UNDERSTAND AND RECEIVE GOD’S LOVE FOR US WE WILL DO NOTHING BUT LOVE HIM BACK AND LOVE OUR FELLOW BEINGS. God doesn’t want us to love Him out of fear of punishment; He wants us to love Him out of gratitude – 1 John 4:19.
When we are full of GOD’S LOVE FOR US (Ephesians 3:18-19) and are guided by love: we will be patient and kind, we won’t be jealous, boastful, proud, or rude, we won’t demand our own way and be irritable, we won’t keep records of being wronged, we won’t rejoice about injustice, we won’t give up, we won’t lose faith, we will always be hopeful, and we will endure every circumstance – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.
We don’t need the Law that was given through Moses, we have a new commandment which was given by Jesus Himself.
