Worship God in Spirit

We should worship and serve God in Spirit because it takes faith, not works, to please God.

God is Spirit, and He only can be accessed through what is done in the Spirit. We cannot correctly serve Him by our flesh (John 4:24).

…

The old covenant was a contract between God and Israel. God promised to do His part of the contract if Israel would keep their part of the contract. That covenant failed because Israel could not meet the terms of the contract.

God knew that Israel would fail to keep the contract even though they claimed that they would do everything God would command them to do (Exodus 19:5-8). God decided to introduce a system that would still allow Him to bless Israel even though they did not keep their promise. He told them to shed the blood of an innocent animal whenever they fail to live up to their part of the covenant.

By this act God was showing what He was going to do for the whole world when He sheds the blood of His innocent Son; He would be able to treat the whole world better than it deserves. After Jesus died in our place God stopped dealing with us according to our sins (Isaiah 54:9 & Hebrews 10:16-18).

God now deals with us according to our faith in what He did for our spirits. The spirits of the believers are treated like Jesus would be treated if He was still on earth. Hence God wants us to serve Him in spirit because in our spirits we are perfect and our service is acceptable before Him.

God no longer condemns us for the sin that may be in our flesh but He empowers us to overcome that sin (Romans 7:13-25 and Romans 8:1). Our consciences, the society, and the devil will condemn us but NOT God because He declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving His Son as a sacrifice for our sins (Romans 8:3).

When we serve or worship God we must do it with full assurance of faith, not because we do not have sin, but because our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with the water of the Word of God (Hebrews 10:22). We have been set apart for God and perfected forever (Hebrews 10:10&14)

Because you have faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ worship God with a clear conscience, you will see Him transform you (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Your victory is in living life in the Spirit.

Romans 7 and 8 have been a challenge for many believers because they do not understand that we do not serve God in the flesh but in the Spirit – John 4:24. The last verse of chapter seven tells us the answer to the challenges that are faced by a carnal (led by the five senses) believer; the victory is in living in Christ not personal strength.

According to the 8th chapter of the book of Romans we cannot completely overcome our carnality by our strength, we need to allow the Holy Spirit to rule us and then we will see the manifestation of our freedom from evil desires.

We are either ruled by the Holy Spirit or we are ruled by our desires. Romans 6:14 says sin will not dominate us because we are not under the law. The law serves to condemn and lead to death (2 Corinthians 3:7&9). The first step to overcoming sin is to accept that the law no longer condemns you if you are in Christ Jesus because the law demand was fully paid in the body of Christ – Romans 8:3.

Romans 8 tells us that we need to take our eyes off our carnality (being controlled by our five senses) and focus on who we are in the Spirit (what Christ accomplished for us). To be carnally minded brings death, being spiritually minded produce life and peace where there is death – Romans 8:6.

Living in the Spirit takes faith. Faith believes and confesses. If you believe what the Lord says about you, you will confess it even though in the natural things may look differently to what you believe. 2 Corinthians 4:13 says – And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak.

We must believe and focus on how we are before God (righteous and holy in Christ Jesus), that is what transforms our behavior. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says – But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

The key knowledge for one to be able to live in the Spirit is that IF YOU ARE IN CHRIST YOU WILL NOT BE CONDEMNED BY GOD. Your conscience and people may condemn you but God does not and will not condemn you. Romans 8:1 & 2 Corinthians 5:21.

As Christians we are called to live our lives as a blessing to others (John 13:34). We are able to do that when we first accept God’s unconditional love for us (1 John 4:19). How can we give love to others when we thing God doesn’t love us for whatever reason? You can only give what you have.

Remember that self-centeredness is the root of all sin, while Christ-centeredness is the answer to the desire to sin – Romans 8.5. E.g. will it be easy to steal while confessing that God has supplied all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus? We overcome the power of sin when we take our focus away from sin and confess our right-standing before God. That is faith – 2 Corinthians 4:13.

We are not set free from sin and death by our performance but by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:2,9,11,13).

Life in the Spirit requires faith to call those things that you don’t see in the natural as though they exist – Romans 4:17. Confess who you are in Christ, you will see your life being transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit (not your strength) – Galatians 5:16.

Because of the strong focus on preaching works of the Law we have been made to believe that we do not deserve the favour of God until we have done what the Law demands.

This is clearly seen when we believe that we do not deserve what we need from God because we have not met a certain standard. The standard could be prayer, going to church, fasting, giving, walking in love, etc.

We live our lives as if we need God’s grace plus our works of the Law to receive from God. For an example, we believe that God will not protect us or provide for us because we did not pray enough in the morning, we were angry when someone did something we do not approve, we missed a church service, we did not give enough money at church, etc.

The question to ask ourselves now that we live under the new covenant is: since when did God’s promises become conditional to our performance against a standard of the Law and not only believing the promises because Jesus has made us qualify for them (Romans 8:32, Galatians 3:13-14)? Have we gone back to the old covenant where God was bound by the agreement He made with Israel such that He could not bless them until they carefully followed His commandments (Deuteronomy 28:1-2)?

God promised to “make a new covenant with the house of Israel and Judah, and to never remember their sins” (Jeremiah 31:31-34 and Hebrews 10:14-18). God can treat us better than we deserve because Jesus fulfilled the Law by keeping it perfectly on our behalf. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ He has made you qualify for all God’s favour because He paid the prize for your sins, (past, present, and future) – Hebrews 10:10&14.

Therefore, do not disqualify yourself from receiving the grace of God because you think that you have to do something to qualify for it. We start our relationship with God by faith and continue living in it by faith in what Jesus accomplished for us; not by doing works of the Law (Romans 1:17).

Don’t approach God expecting to get what you deserve, approach Him expecting to get what Jesus provided for you through His finished work.

RECEIVE GOD’S UNEARNED FAVOUR FOR YOU BECAUSE JESUS PAID FOR IT!

We have received questions about our post for the 20th of November. The people who have a question about the post are concerned because it seems like we are saying people can continue sinning because Jesus paid the penalty for our sins. Our brief response to the question around that concern is as follows:

We should not confuse consequences for sin with the punishment from God. If I am caught stealing I will go to jail. When I have to answer for my wrong I should not think that God is punishing me for my sin. 1 Corinthians 5:1-5 give us an example of a man that was living in sin and Apostle Paul ordered that this man be handed over to Satan to destroy his flesh to save his spirit. Sin will eventually kill you but your spirit will be saved if you believe that Jesus paid the penalty for your sin. The Law does not differentiate between significant and insignificant sin, when you break one part of the Law you have broken the whole Law (James 2:10); everybody should get the same punishment; lake of fire. This means that according to the Law you will go to the lake of fire for lying, being fearful, doubting, murder, adultery, etc (Revelation 21:8). The Bible says if we claim to have no sin we are liars. So we all deserve to go to the lake of fire. This is where Jesus came in and rescued us if we believe in Him. He then empowers us through the Holy Spirit to overcome sin (for more info on this subject visit our website to listen to a teaching entitled “your victory is in living in the Spirit”. God doesn’t use fear but kindness to turn us from our wicked ways (Romans 2:4). As the Church we need to teach the truth and not use fear to get people to do right (John 8:31-32). Keep on visiting our website for more info as we are slowly uploading sermons preached at our church which give more info on this subject. God bless.

of Galatians 3:19 that mentions the statement in question. Verses 21-25 of the same chapter indicate that the law could not give us life, God used it to guide Israel until Christ arrives to make them acceptable before Him and empower them to live right. Christ gives life, which the law could not give. The law tells you that you are wrong and leaves you to fix yourself, which is impossible to do as shown in Galatians 3:10-11 and James 2:10-11. When Jesus came He empowered us to be righteous before God, and when we behold His glory the Holy Spirit changes us to be like Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18). Our transformation no longer happens as we strive to live according to the standard of the law, it happens as we behold Christ because the Holy Spirit goes to work in us to change us to be like Christ. Since Christ, has come to live within us we no longer need external guidance, the Holy Spirit has taken over the role of the Guide (Romans 7:6 Amplified Bible). We know that this is not how these verses are normally taught, see if you read them in context if you will not come to the same conclusion as we have. We hope this helps, God bless!

Love Revealed – Part 5

God never wanted to destroy us, human beings, for our sins, He always believed in His plan to rescue us and bring us back to where we relate to Him without guilt and shame as the Holy Spirit transforms us back to who He created us to be (Ephesians 1:4-6).

So God started revealing HIS LOVE STORY by giving us a PICTURE OF JESUS in the form of innocent animals being killed in humans’ place to 1. provide for their needs (Genesis 3:21), 2. please God so that He could bless them (Genesis 4:4), and 3. remove their sins so that He could freely bless them (Exodus 20:24). Before Jesus came God would rather kill an innocent animal than kill a human being for his/her sin. God fully revealed His Love Story when He killed His Son in the place of human beings (2 Corinthians 5:21). THIS IS LOVE IN ACTION!.

At times we do not acknowledge the love of God that was revealed under the Old Covenant but we interpret it as God showing favoritism. Let’s look at David and the nation of Israel to see the power of God’s love.

The Bible describes David as the man after God’s heart (Acts 13:22). If you are familiar with the Bible you know about David’s blunders. Yet God calls him a man after His own heart. In this story we see that GOD IS LOOKING FOR SINCERITY NOT PERFECTION, just like He told Abraham (Genesis 17:1). God knows that if you are sincere in your relationship with Him you will not be pleased to disobey Him such that you will see your life change for better as you spend time with Him in prayer and His Word (Romans 12:2 & 2 Corinthians 3:18).

Numbers 23:21 tells us that God did not OBSERVE sin in Jacob, nor did He SEE mischief in Israel. This verse doesn’t say there was no sin and mischief in Israel, He didn’t observe or see sin and mischief because He had forgiven Israel. Therefore Balaam could not curse but bless them (verses 18-20). God ensured that sorcery or divination did not work against Jacob not because they didn’t sin but because God loved them and He wanted to show forth His goodness (verses 22&23). This is what He wants to do for those who believe in Him (Romans 4:6-8).

When Israel was passing Edom as they were wondering in the wilderness they became very discouraged and murmured against God and Moses (Numbers 21:4-6). This is not the first time that they murmured against God. But this time God sent fiery serpents as punishment for murmuring. By this time Israel was under the Law Covenant. This covenant stated that if they did good God would bless them but if they didn’t do good they would be punished (Exodus 20). So, God was within His rights to punish them for murmuring. (In future we will look at the purpose of the Law and the fact that we live under a different covenant to the one that Israel lived under. Covenants dictate God’s way of dealing with people hence we see different people experiencing different treatment from God.)

When Israel repented of their sin, murmuring, God instructed Moses to make a serpent out of bronze and set it on a pole. God said whenever a person is bitten by a fiery serpent, that came because of their sin, should simply look up at the fiery serpent that was hanging on the pole and they would live (Numbers 21:7-9).

Jesus said that the same way the fiery serpent was LIFTED UP ON THE POLE in the wilderness to DRAW JUDGMENT for Israel’s sin was the same way He was going to be LIFTED UP WHEN HE DIES to take the penalty for our sin. (John 12:31-33). (Please note that in the NKJV the word PEOPLES is itiliced; not in the original manuscript but added by translators.

When Jesus died on the cross He did not draw all people to Himself hence people still go to hell if they do not believe in Him, HE DREW ALL JUDGMENT THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO COME TO US. Think of a lightning rod, it draws lightning to itself to protect property around it. What Jesus did is similar to what a lightning rod does; He drew to Himself all the judgment that was supposed to come to us because we broke the Law (Romans 3:23-28). THIS IS LOVE IN ACTION!

Love Revealed – Part 6

The Bible teaches us that Jesus Christ was not killed just because satan and some people wanted Him dead, His death was planned by God the Father so that He could redeem mankind from sin (1 Peter 1:18-21, 1 John 2:2). Sin separated mankind from God, when that happened God promised that there was going to be a Seed of the woman that was going to destroy what satan did by getting Adam and Eve to disobey Him (Genesis 3:15). When God had a man to bring this Seed through He proclaimed blessings over this man, Abraham, and his Seed (not seeds). The Bible tells us that the Seed God was talking about was Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:16).

We learn from the Bible that the Law was introduced after the promises God made to Abraham and it did not nullify the promises. THE PURPOSE of the Law was to make mankind understand their sinfulness (Galatians 3:16-19). The Law aroused sinful passions in their bodies (Romans 7:5). It introduced knowledge of sin, and then sin hijacked the Law to produce all manner of evil desires in mankind (Romans 7:7&8). Before the introduction of the Law sin was dead, sin came alive when the Law was introduced (Romans 7:8&9). The way to destroy the power of sin in your life is to dissociate yourself from the Law as the New Testament tells us to (Romans 7:6, Romans 6:14, and Galatians 4:30).

The Bible calls the Law the ministry of condemnation and death (2 Corinthians 3:6-7&9). Verse 7 tells us that Paul was talking about the Ten Commandments as we know that those were the only laws that were written on stones. As you subject yourself to the condemning voice of the Law you will not enjoy your relationship with God because you think He remembers your sins, even though He does not (Hebrews 10:16-23).

When we have this understanding we can see what happened in Exodus 19. Remember that we use the New Testament to interpret the Old Testament. In Exodus 19 we see God wanting to continue dealing with His people without the Law but they told Him that they would do everything He tells them to do. When they told Him this, God changed His tone toward them (Exodus 19:3-13). Verse 5 tells us that God repeated what He said to Abraham (Genesis 17:1-2,10), Israel didn’t respond the way Abraham responded hence God gave them the Law (Exodus 19:7-25, and chapter 20). Abraham didn’t look at his capability to meet God’s standard but focused on the ability of God to fulfill His promise.

God wanted to continue dealing with Israel the way He dealt with Abraham; by grace and mercy (Romans 4:13&16). Jesus took care of the penalty that was supposed to come to all mankind because of the sin of Adam (Romans 5:17-21). He nailed the law at the cross (Colossians 2:13-18). We have been legally set free from the Law (Romans 7:4-6). God is not counting our sins against us (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).

When God removed the Law from His dealings with us He was not saying we can live as we wish. In the following articles we will talk about how God gets us to live right without the Law.
