We No Longer Relate to God through the Law – Part 1
The law has a purpose. Its purpose is not to make us holy before God.
Galatians 3:19, 21-22 NLT…
Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise TO SHOW PEOPLE THEIR SINS. But the law was DESIGNED TO LAST ONLY UNTIL the coming of the child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people. Is there a conflict, then, between God’s law and God’s promises? Absolutely not! IF THE LAW COULD GIVE US NEW LIFE, WE COULD BE MADE RIGHT WITH GOD BY OBEYING IT. But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God’s promise of freedom ONLY BY BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST.
Romans 3:19-22 NLT
Obviously, the law applies to those TO WHOM IT WAS GIVEN, for its PURPOSE is to keep people from having excuses, AND to show that the entire world is guilty before God. FOR NO ONE CAN EVER BE MADE RIGHT WITH GOD BY DOING WHAT THE LAW COMMANDS. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. BUT NOW GOD HAS SHOWN US A WAY TO BE MADE RIGHT WITH HIM WITHOUT KEEPING THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE LAW, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. WE ARE MADE RIGHT WITH GOD BY PLACING OUR FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
God did tell Israel that there was coming a day when He would stop relating to His people through the law.
Jeremiah 31:31-34 NLT
“The day is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife,” says the Lord. “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the Lord. “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”
Hebrews 10:14-17 NLT
For by that one offering He FOREVER MADE PERFECT those who are being made holy. And the Holy Spirit also testifies that this is so. For He says, “This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord : I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” Then he says, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds.”
