The Real Gospel – Part 24
The righteousness by the law reflects one’s performance against the law. In that case, one gets blessed or cursed in line with his or her performance.
Hallelujah to God for giving us RIGHTEOUSNESS BY FAITH instead of us striving for righteousness by the law! (Romans 5:17)
Romans 10:5 says, “Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things WILL LIVE BY THEM.”
God said this, through Moses, “Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 18:5)
Moses expounded on this principle in Deuteronomy 28:1-2,15 when he said:
“1 Now it shall come to pass, if you DILIGENTLY OBEY THE VOICE OF THE LORD YOUR GOD, TO OBSERVE CAREFULLY ALL HIS COMMANDMENTS which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.
“2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, BECAUSE YOU OBEY THE VOICE OF THE LORD YOUR GOD.
“15 However, IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THE LORD YOUR GOD AND DO NOT CAREFULLY FOLLOW ALL HIS COMMANDS AND DECREES I am giving you today, ALL THESE CURSES WILL COME ON YOU AND OVERTAKE YOU:”
Today we see some believers trying to live by this command (Leviticus 18:5 & Deuteronomy 28:1-2,15), and call that living by faith. THAT IS NOT FAITH, IT IS RIGHTEOUSNESS BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW SINCE IN THIS CASE ONE RECEIVES FROM GOD ACCORDING TO HIS OR HER PERFORMANCE (Romans 10:5).
Paul said the following to the churches at Galatia, “So again I ask, DOES GOD GIVE YOU HIS SPIRIT AND WORK MIRACLES among you by the works of the law, OR BY YOUR BELIEVING WHAT YOU HEARD?” Galatians 3:5
He continued in Galatians 3:10 saying, “For ALL WHO RELY ON THE WORKS OF THE LAW ARE UNDER A CURSE, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.””
According to Galatians 3 vs 5&10, we (believers in Christ) cannot claim that God blesses us because we keep a particular command. WHEN WE DO THAT WE PLACE OURSELVES UNDER A CURSE SINCE WE CANNOT KEEP THE WHOLE LAW.
This is confirmed by James 2:10 where the Word says, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet STUMBLES AT JUST ONE POINT IS GUILTY OF BREAKING ALL OF IT.”
So, God doesn’t look at our good performance to be able to bless us, HE LOOKS AT OUR FAITH IN WHAT HE DID FOR US IN CHRIST. This is different to how He dealt with those who were under the law (Romans 3:19 & Galatians 4:5).
HE WENT ON TO TELL US NOT TO MIX THE LAW (performance to please God) AND FAITH (believing what God did for us in Christ).
Galatians 4 vs 21-22, 24, 28, 30 say:
“21 Tell me, YOU WHO WANT TO BE UNDER THE LAW, are you not aware of what the law says?
“22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.
“24 These things are being taken figuratively: THE WOMEN REPRESENT TWO COVENANTS. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and BEARS CHILDREN WHO ARE TO BE SLAVES: This is Hagar.
“28 NOW YOU, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, LIKE ISAAC, ARE CHILDREN OF PROMISE.
“30 But what does Scripture say? “GET RID OF THE SLAVE WOMAN AND HER SON, FOR THE SLAVE WOMAN’S SON WILL NEVER SHARE IN THE INHERITANCE WITH THE FREE WOMAN’S SON.”
This passage of Scripture clearly states that THOSE WHO PLACE THEIR TRUST IN THE LAW WILL NOT HAVE A SHARE IN THE INHERITANCE THAT IS RECEIVED BY THOSE WHO PLACE THEIR FAITH IN WHAT JESUS DID FOR US.
So, we should not mix faith with performance to satisfy a standard of the law. When we do that, we become spiritually barren; THE WORD OF GOD DOES NOT PRODUCE IN OUR LIVES.
This is one of the reasons why, most of the time, new believers in Christ seem to get “quick” results in prayer when they are compared to those who boast of being Christians for a long time.
NEW BELIEVERS PUT ALL THEIR TRUST IN WHAT JESUS DID FOR US (since they relatively have nothing to boast about), WHILE SOME OLD BELIEVERS PUT THEIR TRUST IN WHAT THEY DO TO DESERVE OR QUALIFY FOR THE ANSWER.
Self-righteous believers do not receive answers in prayer, UNTIL they become desperate and cry out to God for help without boasting of how much they deserve the answer since they may have behaved well.
