The Real Gospel – Part 30
It is possible to commit our lives to the Lord for the purpose of salvation and yet NOT be yielded to the Lord in our daily lives.
Unfortunately this kind of life prevents us from enjoying the best that God has for our lives.
It is only when we make the total sacrifice of every area of our lives that we begin to see God’s perfect will manifest through our lives.
Romans 12 v 1 says, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to GIVE YOUR BODIES TO GOD because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. THIS IS TRULY THE WAY TO WORSHIP HIM .”
It is important for us to always remember that CHRIST’S SOLUTION TO SIN IS LIFE IN THE SPIRIT, NOT FIGHTING SIN WITH HUMAN STRENGTH. We overcome sin by placing our attention on the spiritual life we have in Christ (Galatians 5 v 16 & Romans 6 v 14).
We are never overpowered by sin such that we find ourselves doing what we don’t want to do (Romans 8 vs 7-9). When we get born again (Romans 6 vs 6-7, John 3 v 3, & Romans 10 vs 9-10), we receive the new nature that cannot be overcome by sin (Ephesians 4 v 24 & Colossians 3 v 10).
When we commit a sin, we do so by choice (Romans 6 v 16). It is because we sowed seeds of the desire by what we exposed ourselves to (through what we saw, heard, touched, smelled, and tasted – Romans 8 v 6).
When desire is fully conceived, we try to stop its birth, only to find that it is too late since everything that is conceived has to be birthed (James 1 vs 14-15). THE SECRET TO VICTORY OVER SIN IS TO AVOID STIRRING UP THE DESIRE, IN THE FIRST PLACE (2 Timothy 2 v 22).
When we get born again, we shouldn’t let our minds to idle. When we let our minds to idle, they become Satan’s playing field. We should give ourselves to the works of righteousnes (Romans 6:18).
When we focus on doing righteousness, our minds get re-trained to discern between good and evil (Romans 12 v 2). A MIND THAT IS TAUGHT TO VALUE RIGHTEOUSNESS EVENTUALLY CAUSES THE BODY TO STOP DESIRING EVIL.
It is for this reason that Paul told the believers in Rome to give their bodies to God as living sacrifice (Romans 12 v 1).
It is important to note that we are the ones who have to make this presentation of our bodies to the Lord. He will not do it for us. Some of us might pray, “Lord, You do what You have to do to make us serve You.” That is not a proper prayer.
We cannot have someone lay hands on us to impart this commitment to us. We cannot just rebuke the flesh and expect it to disappear. We have to give our bodies to God as living sacrifices daily.
This sounds like a contradiction in terms. How can we be living sacrifices when sacrifices are always dead?
This is speaking of the fact that offering ourselves to God is not just a one-time deal. We have to die to our own desires daily. This has to be a living, ongoing commitment to the Lord.
Living sacrifices have a tendency to keep crawling off the altar. Every minute of every day, we have to reaffirm this decision to be totally separated unto God. This is what Paul was referring to by the term “living sacrifice.”
Many Christians think that living lives totally consecrated to God is something that only preachers or a few lay people do. They see it as “extra” and not “normal” Christianity.
However, Paul said THIS LEVEL OF COMMITMENT IS OUR REASONABLE SERVICE (Romans 12 v 1). Jesus died for each one of us. Each one of us ought to live for Him.
Colossians 3 vs 1-3 say:
“1 Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
“2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.
“3 FOR YOU DIED TO THIS LIFE, AND YOUR REAL LIFE IS HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD.”
Romans 8 vs 12-13 say:
“12 My dear friends, we must not live to satisfy our desires.
“13 If you do, you will die. BUT YOU WILL LIVE, IF BY THE HELP OF GOD’S SPIRIT YOU SAY “NO” TO YOUR DESIRES.”
