The Real Gospel – Part 7
Faith rests on God’s ability, it doesn’t depend on what we do.
UNDER THE NEW COVENANT, GOD RESPONDS TO FAITH IN HIS ABILITY, NOT WHAT WE DO.
Therefore, when we receive answers to our prayers we should not claim that God answered us because of what we did. (Romans 8:32).
This truth is clearly stated in Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome. There we see that God has taken us back to the covenant He made with Abraham, NOT THE COVENANT HE MADE WITH ISRAEL ON MOUNT SINAI (Galatians 4:21-31).
Romans 4:13 says, “Clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants WAS BASED NOT ON HIS OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S LAW, BUT ON A RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD THAT COMES BY FAITH.”
This verse says FAITH AND LAW ARE DIFFERENT, AND OPPOSING, WAYS OF RELATING TO GOD. Romans 11:6, Ephesians 2:8-9 and John 1:17 confirm this statement.
This is how the Message Bible phrases Romans 4:13-15:
“That famous promise God gave Abraham—THAT HE AND HIS CHILDREN WOULD POSSESS THE EARTH —WAS NOT GIVEN BECAUSE OF SOMETHING ABRAHAM DID OR WOULD DO. It was based on God’s decision to put everything together for him, which Abraham then entered when he believed (Abraham accessed the promise through faith, not by obeying the law — Galatians 3:17-20).
If those who get what God gives them only get it by doing everything they are told to do and filling out all the right forms properly signed, that eliminates personal trust completely and turns the promise into an ironclad contract!
That’s not a holy promise; that’s a business deal. A contract drawn up by a hard-nosed lawyer and with plenty of fine print only makes sure that you will never be able to collect. BUT IF THERE IS NO CONTRACT IN THE FIRST PLACE, SIMPLY A PROMISE —and God’s promise at that—YOU CAN’T BREAK IT.” (BRACKETS ARE MINE).
WE DON’T HAVE A CONTRACT WITH GOD, WE HAVE A PROMISE FROM HIM. THEREFORE, NO PERFORMANCE IS EXPECTED FROM US BEFORE WE RECEIVE THE PROMISE — Romans 8:32.
Romans 4:13 says WE CAN’T BREAK THE PROMISE OF GOD BECAUSE IT IS NOT RECEIVED BY OBEYING THE LAW. HALLELUJAH!!! We simply have to believe and receive!!!
Second Corinthians 1:20 says, “FOR ALL OF GOD’S PROMISES HAVE BEEN FULFILLED IN CHRIST WITH A RESOUNDING “YES!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.”
Lastly, Romans 4:16 says, “So the promise is received by faith. IT IS GIVEN AS A FREE GIFT. AND WE ARE ALL CERTAIN TO RECEIVE IT, WHETHER OR NOT WE LIVE ACCORDING TO THE LAW OF MOSES, IF WE HAVE FAITH LIKE ABRAHAM’S. For Abraham is the father of all who believe.”
Therefore, we receive from God by faith, not by qualifying through what we do to deserve His favour.
NOW, THIS IS THE REAL GOSPEL (THE NEARLY TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE NEWS).
REST IN THE FINISHED WORK OF JESUS CHRIST – Hebrews 4:1-3!
